Midnight at the Blackbird Café by Heather Webber

Goodreads

Heather Webber's Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe is a captivating blend of magical realism, heartwarming romance, and small-town Southern charm.

Nestled in the mountain shadows of Alabama lies the little town of Wicklow. It is here that Anna Kate has returned to bury her beloved Granny Zee, owner of the Blackbird Café.

It was supposed to be a quick trip to close the café and settle her grandmother’s estate, but despite her best intentions to avoid forming ties or even getting to know her father’s side of the family, Anna Kate finds herself inexplicably drawn to the quirky Southern town her mother ran away from so many years ago, and the mysterious blackbird pie everybody can’t stop talking about.

As the truth about her past slowly becomes clear, Anna Kate will need to decide if this lone blackbird will finally be able to take her broken wings and fly.

I enjoyed it at a lot.

I did not find it very Hallmark-esq. Yes, woman comes to small town to settle Grandma's estate and falls in love with the town and the people. But that's were it ends being Hallmark and turns into heartwarming small town where everyone knows your name AND your secrets. It's about family ties, grief, old grudges. Heck, I'd like to vacation there and have breakfast at the Blackbird Café.

Stephanie Willis narrated Faylene and cracked me up every time she had a part! I'm not sure I would have enjoyed her character as much if I had read it rather than listened to it. She's the town's fast talking busybody that everyone adores. She's full of wisdom and storytelling. She fires off questions in rapid succession without coming up for air or waiting for answers to her questions. Yes, she was my favorite.

Speaking of favorites, this was one of my favorite quotes: "That a person you love is never truly gone—they're always there, whether it's in a memory … or a dream.
