Beautiful Little Fools ⭐⭐⭐

Beautiful Little Fools by Jillian Cantor

G👀dreads

On a sultry August day in 1922, Jay Gatsby is shot dead in his West Egg swimming pool. To the police, it appears to be an open-and-shut case of murder/suicide when the body of George Wilson, a local mechanic, is found in the woods nearby.

Then a diamond hairpin is discovered in the bushes by the pool, and three women fall under suspicion. Each holds a key that can unlock the truth to the mysterious life and death of this enigmatic millionaire.
Jillian Cantor revisits the glittering Jazz Age world of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, retelling this timeless American classic from the women’s perspective. Beautiful Little Fools is a quintessential tale of money and power, marriage and friendship, love and desire, and ultimately the murder of a man tormented by the past and driven by a destructive longing that can never be fulfilled.

Genre: Historical Fiction, Mystery

Overall Enjoyment 🎉🎉🎉

Did it grab and keep my attention? 🎣🎣🎣

Would I recommend it to anyone?  🤷If you enjoyed the Great Gatsby and want to explore a more scandalous ending.

Would I want a sequel 🕮 No

Would I want to read more books by this author 📚  Maybe 🤷

Trigger Warnings 💣💥Murder, Infidelity, Domestic Violence

Spice 🌶 Not really.

Plot twist 🌪 Not really.

Tidbits: I must not have read that last paragraph in the about that it was a retelling/alternate ending to The Great Gatsby or I probably would have passed. I think I read that back in Jr High or High School so 127 years ago so that first paragraph didn't trigger the memory for me. In the original we know it was determined that George killed Jay and then killed himself. No spoiler there even if you haven't read it or seen the movie, it's in the first paragraph. The author upped the ante with three female characters and gave them all the motive to kill both Jay and George.
It was good and kept me entertained enough, but it wasn't great.

🎧 Lots of narrators on this one: Cassandra Campbell, Julia Whelan, Elizabeth Evans, Brittany Pressley, George Newbern.
