The Maid by Nita Prose
G👀dreads
Molly Gray is not like anyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by.
Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life's complexities all by herself. No matter—she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job. She delights in donning her crisp uniform each morning, stocking her cart with miniature soaps and bottles, and returning guest rooms at the Regency Grand Hotel to a state of perfection.
But Molly's orderly life ended the day she entered the suite of the infamous and wealthy Charles Black, only to find it in a state of disarray and Mr. Black himself dead in his bed. Before she knows what's happening, Molly's unusual demeanor has the police targeting her as their lead suspect. She quickly finds herself caught in a web of disappointment, one she has no idea how to untangle. Fortunately for Molly, friends she never knew she had unite with her in a search for clues to what really happened to Mr. Black—but will they be able to find the real killer before it's too late?
A Clue -like, locked-room mystery and a heartwarming journey of the spirit, The Maid explores what it means to be the same as everyone else and yet entirely different—and reveals that all mysteries can be solved through connection to the human heart.

The How/Why: My friend's 87 year old mother is reading this one for her book club at the Senior Living facility she lives at, which I affectionately refer to as Shady Pines. He put us on a three-way call so we could discuss. I told her I'd have to get back with her because I hadn't read it yet. We will compare notes when I'm done. When I checked the About I asked her who picked this Mystery Thriller for her book club. The two ladies in charge of the book club pick the books each month. Interesting...
It only has a 3.75 star rating on Goodreads, however it won the Goodreads Choice Award for Readers' Favorite Mystery & Thriller 2022. FWLTW.

💻 Tidbits ~ Okay, Molly is 100% precious. She's the preverbal Ray of Sunshine. She was raised by her Gran to be prim and proper and she doesn't disappoint in that quest. Unfortunately she is also very naive which leads her to trust people who can't be trusted. She is taken advantage of and finds herself in hot water, and not the kind she uses to make her evening tea with.
After she finds a prominent hotel guest dɇȂd , dear sweet Molly is arrested for MŪrdɇr ! GASP! :clutching pearls: She's humiliated that she has to see a judge in her pajamas! She calls the only person she knows she can trust, the sweet elderly doorman. With his help, Gran's words of wisdom echoing in her mind, and her super sleuth knowledge from watching Columbo, she is armed to face the system.
How prim and proper is she really?!?!
I'm going with five stars because I start with five and deduct if/when it loses me along the way. I don't have any reason for deductions. This is a lightweight mystery crime with a quirky FMC. If you are into heavy duty mindboggling thrillers, you might want to pass.
