The Town I Call Home by Veronica Mixon *DNF*
G👀dreads:
A gripping, heartwarming portrayal of a son’s loyalty and a father’s undying love.
After his childhood friend is charged with murder and his dad is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Jackson Taylor walks away from a lucrative Atlanta law career and returns home to the small, southern town of Loblolly.
The case against Jackson’s friend, the son of a state senator, appears to be circumstantial and easily defended, leaving Jackson shocked when his father, a retired county sheriff, insists he stay clear of the case.
Jackson shrugs off the warning as paranoia associated with his dad’s disease. But within days, his winnable case upends when the police discover his father’s fingerprints on the murder weapon.
Jackson suddenly finds himself in the battle of his life against his father’s failing memory, a prosecutor with a hidden agenda, and a judge dead-set on awarding the powerful senator’s son a speedy trial.
Genre: Mystery, Fiction, Thriller
Once again I don't know who or where I saw the recommendation but it sounds interesting enough. High Profile Murder. Family Secrets. Sounds interesting enough.

Nope, I actually gave it to 35% before I returned it.
Divorce lawyer, sucked into a criminal case, was it his friend, was it his dad, turns investigator. The sadness of dealing with parental dementia. Not very thrilling of a thriller (IMO).

I was also struggling with the narration. It says Jonathan Strait, who is a real human, however after I ditched it I went back and read some reviews and people claim it was narrated by AI. One reviewer said:
"The story is good enough but the virtual narration has too many contextual mispronunciations (think “record” a story vs. listen to a “record”). Every time that happens it pulls the listener out of the story. Unfortunately it appears this author’s books all use virtual narration.
Another said "I listened to the book and did not realize when I began that it was narrated using AI. It didn't take long for me to realize that I was put off by the cadence of the narrator as well as the mispronunciation of several words. Once I was aware of that fact, I tried to listen differently but found that I was not able to get past that."
Some who read the book also said it was edited with AI and it was so bad they couldn't read it.
I believe AI is a great and useful tool, but I also believe it has a place and needs to stay in it's lane. I also strongly believe it should be labeled as such.
🎧Jonathan Strait<<<real or imagined?!?
