People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry

G👀dreads
Poppy and Alex. Alex and Poppy. They have nothing in common. She’s a wild child; he wears khakis. She has insatiable wanderlust; he prefers to stay home with a book. And somehow, ever since a fateful car share home from college many years ago, they are the very best of friends. For most of the year they live far apart—she’s in New York City and he’s in their small hometown—but every summer for a decade, they have taken one glorious week of vacation together.
Genre: Romantic Comedy, Fiction, Contemporary Romance
On one hand it has the Goodreads Choice Award even though it only has 3.85 stars. On the other hand it has really mixed reviews in the FB group from slow and DNF to loved it. I'll let you know which side of the fence I land on.
⭐⭐⭐⭐
I liked it but deducted half a star for the non-linear storytelling which I didn't enjoy like I do typical dual timeline with HF. I felt it was not necessary to build the suspense of how-did-this-relationship-go-south. I also deducted half a star for the Hallmark-esq ending all wrapped up in a tight little bow at the very last possible minute.
Overall Enjoyment 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎊
Did it grab and keep my attention? 🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣
Would I recommend it to anyone? 🤷 Only those who like Rom-Com (emphasis on Com) and HEA.
Would I want a sequel 🕮 ➖ No but I enjoyed the characters and would want to be their friends! Their banter was very funny.
Would I want to read more books by this author 📚 🤷 I'll probably listen to Funny Story but I'm in no hurry. I mean, I've listened to two by Emily Henry. One was a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ and the other a ⭐⭐⭐⭐, so she's at 4.5 with me right now which is pretty good on most rating systems. Plus several people said Funny Story is their fav by her. And added bonus, Julia Whelan 🎧.
Trigger Warnings 💣💥 - None
Spice 🌶 Yes, eventually, not throughout.
Plot twist 🌪 - N/A
Pacing 👟- no bueno with the non-linear timeline.
Tidbits: I think it's good for a rom-com! I like both protagonist, Poppy and Alex. Her witty sense of humor, his dry. We could be friends! What I'm not enjoying is the non-linear storytelling. I enjoy a good dual timeline with historical fiction but this is different. In dual timeline, each one is typically in order, just going back and forth from back in time to current. Chapters are:
Five summers ago
This summer
Twelve summers ago
This summer
Eleven summers ago
current, 10, current 9, current, etc. and ticks down bouncing back and forth until it gets down to two summers ago, which is when they had their fall out, and then back to this summer through the end.
I don't know why she didn't start with This Summer, and then go back and count down to current. I imagine she's going for a suspenseful build up to what happened two years ago to break their friendship but I think she could have accomplished it in a linear way. That part is a little annoying.
