A remarkable trio whose lives were cracked wide open by their husbands’ crimes unite to catch a serial killer in this dazzlingly captivating novel.

Beverley, Elsie, and Margot are not your average housewives. They are all wives of convicted killers. During the sun-drenched summer of 1966, the three women form an unlikely friendship after the discoveries of their husbands’ brutal crimes. With their exes—some of California’s most infamous serial killers—dead or behind bars, they are attempting to forge a new future for themselves.

Headstrong Beverley compulsively tries to maintain control of everything around her, all while raising two children. Bookish Elsie fights day in and day out for the chance to make a name for herself in the newsroom, working among men who sneer at her career goals. Glamorous Margot refuses to take anything seriously and devotes all her energy to upholding the appearance that everything is fine—anything to quell the shame from her husband’s deceit.

They know people look at them and think only one How could they not have known, when their husbands were right under their noses, committing horrific crimes? How much guilt is theirs to carry? And yet when a string of killings hits the news, the three women—underestimated, overlooked, shrewd—decide to get to work. After all, who better to catch a killer than those who have shared their lives and homes with one?

At once a riveting portrayal of shattered trust and a story of gripping suspense, The Secret Lives of Murderers' Wives is a testament to the intricacies of women’s lives and how the deep bonds of female friendship can empower, uplift, and lead us to endure.

Genre: Historical Fiction, Mystery, Thriller, Suspense, Serial Killer

The How/Why: Not sure since it's been on hold for while. I think it was recommended by of my kindred reading spirits who received it as an ARC long before it was published. It was just published 3-3-2026.
I did check before I borrowed it to make sure the violɇncɇ is not graphic t0rturɇ or I would have passed for now. On the plus side, the narrator is Saskia!

Day 2: At the 25% point, violɇncɇ is nothing cringeworthy.

Note to self: Time to get over my recent trauma of thrillers turned hoṜor. ✅ (Reference to my recent hoṜors of Daughters of the Sun and Moon which is finished 👍and Ask for Andrea which I did not 👎.)

💣💥 📢 Content Warnings? Google says: Domestic AbŲsɇ and Violɇncɇ, MŪrdɇr, Sɇriɐl Ki⅃ℒer.
UPDATE: Nothing graphic

🌶 Spice? No

🌪 Plot Twist? Yes but I saw it coming

👟 Pace? Good

💻 Tidbits ~ Excellent. Not your typical mystery/thriller. It's not the point of view of the MŪrdɇrɇrs or the victims, it's the wives behind the men convicted of the crimes.

These women have one major thing in common. Their husbands were convicted MŪrdɇrɇrs. They suffer from guilt by association. People judging them because they must have known what was happening. How could they not have know what their husbands were doing? How? Because they ignored the signs.

Now there is another Sɇriɐl Ki⅃ℒer terrorizing their community.  These three women band together to try to find the criminal before other innocent women fall victim. Who better to analyze the personality traits than women who lived under the same roof and survived the deception right under their noses in plain sight.

I was a little skeptical it would be too graphic with TWs being Domestic AbŲsɇ and Violɇncɇ, but it was well done. Elizabeth Arnott got the point across without resorting to shock value.

EXTRA TIDBITS

The historical part aka In Real Life:
Set in 1966 the book establishes the sense of "historical dread" of Sɇriɐl Ki⅃ℒers. The '60s marked a pivotal era for American true crime. Public became more aware of serial predators through sensationalized media coverage and a string of notorious, often random ki⅃ℒings.
The atmosphere of the glamour in 1966.
The gender-based prejudice in the '60's marginalizing women in the workplace and the social shame placed on the wives of criminals.
The research of the emotional experiences of the characters into real family members of Sɇriɐl Ki⅃ℒers as inspiration, avoiding taking any person's story.
