A glittering, glamorous portrait of the golden age of American department stores and of three visionary women who led them, from the award-winning author of The Plaza .

The American department a palace of consumption that epitomized modern consumerism. Every wish could be met under one roof – afternoon tea, a stroll through the latest fashions, a wedding (or funeral) planned. It was a place where women, shopper and shopgirl alike, could stake out a newfound independence. Whether in New York or Chicago or on Main Street, USA, men owned the buildings, but inside, women ruled.

Genre: NonFiction, History, Fashion, Biography.
Circa early 1900's.

I listened a little while I was puttering around in the casita in the morning. There is a part where she says the sales ladies would say "Oh Harriett" to warn another employee that a customer could not be pleased. Like a take off of modern day "Karen". Do people still use that term? She also says about employees "they didn't have to be pretty but they had to look nice. They provided lunch for the ladies so they wouldn't look too skinny and an exercise class so they wouldn't look to fat". It's labeled nonfiction but it doesn't have to be 100% factual. They are allowed a little fluff. I'm not so sure about the Oh Harriett but it wouldn't be surprised about the meals and exercise class.

Day 2: Ugh, I ditched When Women Ran Fifth Avenue. I was actually beyond the 30% mark when I thought "why are you still listening to this?" The "about" was quite misleading with "a glittering, glamorous portrait of the golden age...". It was quite bland actually. The "three visionary women who led them", boring.🥱💤
