The Extraordinary Deaths of Mrs. Kip by Sara Brunsvold

G👀dreads

Aidyn Kelley is talented, ambitious, and ready for a more serious assignment than the fluff pieces she's been getting as a cub reporter for the Kansas City Star. In her eagerness, she pushes too hard, earning herself the menial task of writing an obituary for an unremarkable woman who's just entered hospice care. But there's more to Clara Kip than meets the eye. The spirited septuagenarian may be dying, but she's not quite ready to cash it in yet. Never one to shy away from an assignment herself, she can see that God brought the young reporter into her life for a reason. And if it's a story Aidyn Kelley wants, that's just what Mrs. Kip will give her—but she's going to have to work for it.

Genre: Historical Fiction, Christian Fiction
There is a lot about Laos refugees and the politics surrounding those events. I think the genre should also include Asian Historical Fiction or something along those lines.

🎣 Did it grab and keep my attention?  🎣 🎣 🎣 🎣 🎣

🗣️ Would I recommend it to anyone? Yes ➕ Unless you don't like Christian Fiction. It was very Faith forward.  Lots of 🙏🙌✝️ 🕮.

🕮 Would I want a sequel? No ➖ Not necessary since Clara was at her end of life.

📚 Would I want to read more books by this author?  Yes ➕ I've added The Atlas of Untold Stories to my TBR list.

💣💥 📢 Sort Warnings? Google says Terminal Illness and Dɇahowever I think it was written well to avoid traumatic events.

🌶 Spice? No

🌪 Plot Twist? Not really but I thought it was supposed to be.

👟 Pace? Good

💻 Tidbits ~ I adored Clara Kip! She was a treasure, like a warm hug on a cold day. What great life lessons she had to share, mostly through scripture, not her adventures. In fact, she thought her life was boring (it wasn't) and wanted Aidyn to conjure up stories to make her death extraordinary. Thus the title. They did not disappoint.
She had a huge impact on refugees from Laos but she downplayed her role like an unsung hero.
I enjoyed how Aidyn went from not being all that interested in her assignment to barely wanting to leave Clara's side in the short time she knew her.

The only thing I question, which I won't deduct a star for because I loved her story THAT much, is why at 79 she had no friends. I get that at that at her age she would have lost touch with many because there was no internet in her prime to stay in touch. Addresses only forwarded for a limited time and phone numbers changed when people moved. Also that others had passed on. However, she had a very dynamic personality and befriend a man on his death bed who was not interested in being friends. Persistent she was! He had no choice but to like her. The staff and the reporter adored her. So the fact that she was entering hospice with no friends to speak of didn't make sense to me.
One small flaw but still all the stars from me.

MY EXTRAS

Mrs. Kip was a fictional character. The historical significance was the post-Vietnam War refugees, the Laotian refugees resettling in Kansas City in the 1970s, and the Christian volunteers who helped them.
Since she was fictional, I still don't understand why the author didn't give her any friends at the end of her life. I would have at least given her church friends!
