The Address ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Address by Fiona Davis

G👀dreads

After a failed apprenticeship, working her way up to head housekeeper of a posh London hotel is more than Sara Smythe ever thought she’d make of herself. But when a chance encounter with Theodore Camden, one of the architects of the grand New York apartment house The Dakota, leads to a job offer, her world is suddenly awash in possibility—no mean feat for a servant in 1884. The opportunity to move to America, where a person can rise above one’s station. The opportunity to be the female manager of The Dakota, which promises to be the greatest apartment house in the world. And the opportunity to see more of Theo, who understands Sara like no one else...and is living in The Dakota with his wife and three young children.

Google/AI

Sara, the manager of the Dakota apartments, has an affair with Theo, a married resident. A century later, Bailey finds an artifact in the building that ties her to Sara – and Theo's murder.

They have an affair AND he was murdered?!?! Well that was a bit of a spoiler without a spoiler alert.

Genre: Historical Fiction, Mystery.
Circa: Dual timeline 1884 and 1984.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

I liked it. It's about The Dakota, which is where John Lennon died.

They referred to it as "The Address" because of it's prestige and would be the most sought after address in it's day and beyond.

There was a horrible part around the 50% mark that made me not want to finish it. It was t0rtŮr0us. I actually cheated and looked at spoilers to make sure that situation wasn't going to continue to the end or I would have quit. There are just things I don't enjoy and books are for my enjoyment, not torment.

I gave it 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐, one star deduction for the situation that made me want to quit (*see spoiler below if interested). I get why it was necessary for historical significance but could have done without some of the in depth description. I liked it, but be aware of trigger warnings.

*Sara is framed for a crime and committed to an asylum rather than a prison. The t0rtŮr0us treatment at the facility made me cringe.
Even worse, the historical significance: this was typical abŮsɇ in asylums at the time.
