She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb

G👀dreads

In this extraordinary coming-of-age odyssey, Wally Lamb invites us to hitch a wild ride on a journey of love, pain, and renewal with the most heartbreakingly comical heroine to come along in years.

Meet Dolores Price. She's 13, wise-mouthed but wounded, having bid her childhood goodbye. Stranded in front of her bedroom TV, she spends the next few years nourishing herself with the Mallomars, potato chips, and Pepsi her anxious mother supplies. When she finally orbits into young womanhood at 257 pounds, Dolores is no stronger and life is no kinder. But this time she's determined to rise to the occasion and give herself one more chance before she really goes under.

It was SOOOoooo long.

My friend Pat picked it and said it was one of the few books she has read more than once. I liked it but won't be reading/listening to it again. It's too much of a downer for me to want to revisit.

Nobody else in the book club liked it! One lady said she was so disgusted with the protagonist that she couldn't finish. She asked the friend she drives to the meetings with to catch her up on how it ended. She said with all the adversity in her life Dolores had not one glimmer of hope for herself. She also wondered "who is Wally Lamb and why did he write this?"

Someone else said she felt he threw a lot of things in from the time period like he had a list and needed to use them up even if not relevant. Like the tv shows and other popular things in the timeline.

I said I had wondered if it had been written by a woman, how it might have been different. Your assignment: Here are the characters, here are the all the things that happened to her, write a book.

I deducted one star because I felt like there was a basket of women's issues and they all had to be used up. I mean how many things can happen to one woman? First I felt sorry for her. Then I was mad at her. Then I felt bad for her. It was somewhat of an emotional roller coaster.

There is a lot of fat shaming, some self inflicted. Be sure to check the triᵷᵷer warnings, there are a lot!

My favorite character was Mr. Pucci, her high school guidance counselor and later her "pal" as he called their friendship. He was so patient with her in her troubled teens and she was so patient with him in his later life.
