The Matchmaker by Paul Vidich

G👀dreads About Summary

In the vein of Graham Greene and John le Carré, The Matchmaker delivers a chilling Cold War spy story set in West Berlin, where an American woman targeted by the Stasi must confront the truth behind her German husband's mysterious disappearance.

Berlin, 1989. Protests across East Germany threaten the Iron Curtain and Communism is the ill man of Europe.
Anne Simpson, an American who works as a translator at the Joint Operations Refugee Committee, thinks she is in a normal marriage with a charming East German. But then her husband disappears, and the CIA and Western German intelligence arrive at her door.
Nothing about her marriage is as it seems. She had been targeted by the Matchmaker--a high level East German counterintelligence officer--who runs a network of Stasi agents. These agents are his "Romeos" who marry vulnerable women in West Berlin to provide them with cover as they report back to the Matchmaker. Anne has been married to a spy, and now he has disappeared, and is presumably dead.
The CIA are desperate to find the Matchmaker because of his close ties to the KGB. They believe he can establish the truth about a high-ranking Soviet defector. They need Anne because she's the only person who has seen his face - from a photograph that her husband mistakenly left out in his office - and she is the CIA's best chance to identify him before the Matchmaker escapes to Moscow. Time is running out as the Berlin Wall falls and chaos engulfs East Germany.

But what if Anne's husband is not dead? And what if Anne has her own motives for finding the Matchmaker to deliver a different type of justice?

The How/Why: I started a spy story and it was too slow and annoying. Too much talk about painful bunions and the quest to find Beatles tickets, not enough I-Spy. It was disappointing because it had been on a long hold with Libby. I hit the >>ReturnEarly button so the many people waiting in line behind me can have at it.
My bookish kindred spirit Gail suggested this one because it starts with the immediate mystery rather than a slow buildup. Shockingly, it was available on Hoopla (4.2 stars vs GR 3.69 FWLTHW). I bumped it ahead of my Libby Borrows because I'm a mood reader/listener and was in the mood for a good SPY story.

🗣️Would I recommend it to anyone? Yes ➕If you like a good spy story that is more like True Crime.

🕮 Would I want a sequel? No ➖ Not necessary. Although I can only imagine how Anne's life would turn out if there was one so I'd probably add it to my list.

📚 Would I want to read more books by this author? Yes ➕ He has some others that have peaked my interest, one being The Good Assassin.

💻 Tidbits ~ Don't judge a book by its title. This not your Bubbe meddling with her yenta neighbor to find a good Matchmaker for you. Nor is it a swipe right dating app!

Little does Anne know when Stefan, the traveling piano tuner who sweeps her off her feet in a whirlwind romance, is actually a SPY! She was handpicked by The Matchmaker for
The Romeo Spy Program to be the perfect "wife cover story" for Stefan's mundane piano tuning life.

When the CIA comes knocking on Anne's door to let her know her husband is missing and presumed d.e.a.d, the puzzle pieces are not lining up. The more she gets entangled with the CIA and the German Intelligence, the more she realizes something is fishy in Denmark, or in this case, Germany.

Favorite Quote:
While being questioned: "There are many kinds of silence. The silence of the dead, the silence of consent, the silence of ignorance. Which one should I assign to you?"
Anne, while trying to digest the entire situation: "There is another type of silence. The silence of confusion".

When betrayal is uncovered and she's told she's the only one who can identify The Matchmaker to put him - emmm - out of business, Holy Transformation! This perfect, quiet wife turns up the RAGE. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

This book reads more like True Crime. As always I take a dive into what is Historical vs what is Fiction.

Historical:

*The Romeo Spy Program was real.
*Under the Stasi (East Germany’s secret police), the foreign intelligence service ran a highly organized campaign using handsome, trained male agents called "Romeos."
*The Romeos would target lonely, unmarried American or West German women who worked in government offices, embassies, or refugee centers. They would court and marry the women who were targeted to establish their cover identity.
*The Matchmaker character was modeled after Markus Wolf, The Spymaster, head of East Germany's foreign intelligence division.
*The Fall of the Wall in 1989 - atmosphere of chaos and street protests. Many of the Western women discovered overnight that their husbands were Stasi moles.

Fiction:
*Anne Simpson and her husband Stefan Kroehler were fictional characters although their relationship mirrored the reality of real Romeo victims.
*Anne had become valuable after accidentally seeing The Matchmaker's face in a photo in her husband's desk. In real life Markus Wolf was photographed by a Swedish photographer in 1978, not a Romeo carelessly leaving a picture lying around.

Also In Real Life:
The psychological aftermath of the women involved was devastating. They had to cope with the reality that their married lives, intimacy, and domestic security had been orchestrated, manipulated, and built on outright lies.
